Catcher Ed Phelps stands as the subject of this 1912 portrait of a Brooklyn National League player, one of the team's men in an era when the club was popularly called the Superbas. The image is a glass negative from the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied news photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Its date of 1912 was assigned later by researchers at the Society for American Baseball Research, so it reflects their estimate rather than a date written on the original. Bain's negatives document the look of the sport and its players during that period.
