Catcher Ed Phelps of the Brooklyn National League club is the subject here, one of many ballplayer portraits the Bain News Service produced in the early 1910s. The Brooklyn team, then nicknamed the Superbas, drew large crowds in New York's baseball-mad years before the Federal League and World War I changed the game. Bain's photographers worked with glass negatives like this 5 by 7 inch plate, which preserve fine detail in faces and uniforms. The 1913 date comes from later research by baseball historians rather than from the negative itself.
