A launch ceremony at a Brooklyn shipyard is the event this picture records, with a vessel named *Vestal* going into the water and a group of men gathered around a figure the caption identifies as General Grant. That caption comes from data supplied by the Bain News Service and has not been verified. Ulysses S. Grant died in 1885, so the man shown was probably a relative, or the label is loose. Glass negatives like this one, made by Bain's news photographers around 1908, preserve the dress and crowds of waterfront events that newspapers reprinted widely, and Brooklyn's yards were busy with launches in those years.
