Bill Dahlen appears in this portrait as a Brooklyn National League player, late in a career that spanned more than two decades in the major leagues. An infielder, he had earlier played for Chicago and the New York Giants before joining Brooklyn, and he was respected as a sturdy defender and a reliable hitter. The glass negative comes from the Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold news photographs to newspapers, and its original caption misspells his name as "Dahlan." The 1910 date rests on later research by baseball historians rather than on the caption itself.
