A U.S. Navy battleship, the U.S.S. Iowa, passes beneath the Brooklyn Bridge in this view, its masts dwarfed by the stone towers and steel cables overhead. The Iowa was a newly commissioned warship of the late 1890s, a period when the United States was building up its fleet and extending its naval reach. Completed in 1883, the bridge was then among the country's most celebrated engineering works, so a battleship sailing under it made a memorable subject. The large glass negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, which was known for its views of American cities and landmarks.
