Titled as a glimpse of the East River, this c1902 view takes in the Brooklyn Bridge, the suspension span that opened in 1883 and linked Manhattan with Brooklyn. John A. Roebling designed it but died from an injury early in construction, and his son Washington Roebling directed much of the work. When Washington fell ill, his wife, Emily Warren Roebling, took on much of the supervision. By the early 1900s the bridge carried trains, streetcars, wagons and pedestrians across the water, making it a favorite subject for photographers. The caption card is unverified, so the exact vantage point and date deserve some caution.
