The Brooklyn Bridge, opened in 1883, was still a novelty when this view was taken around 1894, and its elevated promenade was built for pedestrians as much as for traffic. The photograph looks out along the walkway as people move in both directions, a reminder that the bridge drew crowds who came to cross on foot and take in the river and skyline. The image was registered for copyright by J.S. Johnston of New York City, a photographer working in the period when the bridge had become one of the city's most recognizable landmarks.
