Seen from the Brooklyn side, this wood engraving shows the fireworks and lights that marked the opening of the Brooklyn Bridge, which linked Brooklyn and Manhattan across the East River. Charles Graham drew the scene for *Harper's Weekly*, where it ran in the June 2, 1883 issue, about a week after the bridge opened to the public in late May. Wood engravings like this were how most Americans saw news images before photographs could be reproduced cheaply in magazines, so the print also records how a city displayed its pride in a major engineering feat.
