Few places aboard the U.S.S. *Brooklyn* were hotter or dirtier than the fire room, where stokers shoveled coal into the boilers that powered the cruiser. Named for the city of Brooklyn, the ship was commissioned in 1896 and later served as Commodore Winfield Scott Schley's flagship at the Battle of Santiago de Cuba during the Spanish-American War in 1898. The Detroit Publishing Company photographed many American warships and naval scenes in this period, and this glass negative offers a look at the engineering crews who kept the ship running. Its exact date is uncertain, so it is best read as a record of the navy's coal-fired steam era.
