This view looks forward along the U.S.S. Brooklyn, a protected cruiser named for the New York city across the East River, where the ship's namesake city and its crew of sailors gave the vessel a strong local identity. The photograph shows the ship's forward gun turret and the heavy artillery it housed, the kind of armament that made American cruisers of the late 1890s formidable. The Brooklyn gained lasting fame in the Spanish-American War of 1898, when it fought in the Battle of Santiago de Cuba. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made many large-format views of American places and industry around 1900, recorded the ship during the years when it was new to the fleet.
