Few interiors aboard a turn-of-the-century warship sat closer to the machinery than the chief engineer's quarters, and this view of one on the armored cruiser U.S.S. Brooklyn shows that working world. The ship was named for the New York City borough, was commissioned in 1896, and fought at the Battle of Santiago de Cuba in 1898 during the Spanish-American War. The Detroit Publishing Company made this 8 by 10 inch glass negative as part of its wide survey of American places and people in the late 1890s and early 1900s, so the picture also reflects the period's interest in documenting public institutions.
