Inside the cruiser U.S.S. *Brooklyn*, a ship's pay office was a small, busy workplace where officers and crew drew and settled their wages, and this view records one of those compartments. The *Brooklyn* was an armored cruiser commissioned in 1896, and she became one of the best-known ships of the U.S. Navy after she fought at the Battle of Santiago de Cuba during the Spanish-American War in 1898. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made many photographs of American ships, towns and landscapes around 1900, produced the image as a glass dry plate negative. Two versions survive, one of them reversed left to right, so the photographer or printer evidently made more than one exposure of the scene.
