Inside the engine room of the cruiser Brooklyn, a glass negative records the machinery and the crew who tended it. The ship took its name from the New York city, was commissioned in 1896, and later earned its place in history in the Spanish-American War, when it fought in the 1898 battle off Santiago de Cuba. Engine spaces like this one were hot, cramped, and loud, and the men who worked them kept the ship's propellers turning. The Detroit Publishing Company, better known for its views of towns, scenery, and tourist sites, made the picture, which makes this shipboard scene an unusual part of its work.
