Lieutenant Capaton is the subject of this glass-plate portrait, which ties him to the cruiser Brooklyn, a ship named for the New York borough and commissioned in 1896. The vessel later fought at the Battle of Santiago de Cuba in 1898, one of the decisive naval actions of the Spanish-American War. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm that photographed American places and people for decades, made this large 8-by-10-inch negative, and its size gives the uniform and pose unusual detail.
