Boatswain Hill, a petty officer, is the subject of this portrait, and the armored cruiser *Brooklyn* is the setting that identifies it. The ship was commissioned in 1896, and in 1898 it served as Commodore Winfield Scott Schley's flagship at the Battle of Santiago de Cuba during the Spanish-American War. The Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed American towns, landscapes and naval life widely in the 1890s and early 1900s, made the negative, which likely dates from the years just before that war.
