The men in this group portrait are members of a signal party aboard the U.S.S. Brooklyn, an armored cruiser of the United States Navy, and the flags they handle were the navy's main means of relaying orders between ships at sea. The Brooklyn was commissioned in 1896 and saw service in the Spanish-American War in 1898, when fleet communication by flag hoist was essential in combat. The photograph was made on a glass dry plate by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose views of American places and people were widely sold in the early twentieth century.
