The cruiser *Brooklyn* was Commodore Winfield Scott Schley's flagship at the Battle of Santiago de Cuba in July 1898, one of the decisive naval engagements of the Spanish-American War. Here a group of seamen gathers on her gun deck, surrounded by the ship's heavy guns and the cramped interior of a working warship. The Detroit Publishing Company, known for its large glass-plate views of American places, made the negative, which catalogers date to between 1896 and 1899, the years the ship was new and active. Pictures like this show the everyday routine of the men who served those guns.
