Among the crew portraits in this series, this group of Japanese stewards aboard the cruiser U.S.S. Brooklyn stands out for showing the men who kept an officers' household running at sea. The Brooklyn was commissioned in 1896 and was named for the New York city, and it later served as a flagship during the Spanish-American War. Stewards attended to officers' quarters and mess, so the picture reflects the everyday domestic side of naval life. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made the glass-plate negative, documented American places and people across these years.
