Schoolroom instruction for apprentice seamen aboard a warship is the subject here, with the U.S.S. Brooklyn as the setting. The Brooklyn was a steel-hulled cruiser commissioned in 1896, and the Navy trained young enlisted boys on board its larger ships as part of their education in seamanship. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this glass-plate negative sometime between 1896 and 1901, documented American cities, landmarks and daily life for sale to a wide public. The Brooklyn later fought at the Battle of Santiago de Cuba during the Spanish-American War in 1898.
