Assistant Engineer Ryan is pictured here as a member of the crew of the armored cruiser U.S.S. Brooklyn, a ship named for the New York City borough and built in the late 1890s. The Brooklyn was among the Navy's most celebrated cruisers after it took part in the Battle of Santiago de Cuba in 1898, during the Spanish-American War. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm known for its color and black-and-white views of the United States, made this large glass-plate negative sometime between 1896 and 1901. Portraits like this one give a rare personal face to a ship's engineering staff, who kept the cruiser's machinery running.
