The subject here is a company of Marines drilling aboard the U.S.S. Brooklyn, a protected cruiser of the U.S. Navy, which was commissioned in 1896. Shipboard Marine guard companies handled ceremonial duties, sentry posts and landing drills, and a drill like this one shows the discipline the Corps was known for at the close of the nineteenth century. The glass negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers documented American places and people for commercial sale in the 1890s and early 1900s. The date of about 1897 is an estimate, so the picture is best read as a snapshot of the late-1890s peacetime navy just before the Spanish-American War.
