Sailors aboard the cruiser U.S.S. Brooklyn practice with revolvers in this view, a routine part of shipboard training. The Brooklyn was an armored cruiser commissioned in 1896 that later fought at the Battle of Santiago de Cuba during the Spanish-American War in 1898. Small-arms drills like this prepared crews for boarding actions and close-quarters defense. The large glass negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers recorded American places and everyday life in the years around 1900.
