Sailors boxing aboard a warship is an unusual subject for a photographer of the 1890s, and this view shows the cruiser *Brooklyn* from the inside, with men gathered around a bout on the ship's deck. The *Brooklyn* was a steel protected cruiser commissioned in 1896, and she later served as the flagship of Commodore Winfield Scott Schley's squadron during the Spanish-American War, including the Battle of Santiago de Cuba in 1898. Photographs like this one were made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that documented American places and daily life for commercial sale. Its glass negative captures the crowded, informal side of naval routine that official portraits of the ship often left out.
