A goat takes center stage in this glass negative of the cruiser U.S.S. Brooklyn, a warship named for the city of Brooklyn and commissioned in 1896. Goats were a long-standing shipboard tradition in the U.S. Navy, kept as mascots that roamed the decks and became part of a crew's daily life. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made many views of American places and people around the turn of the century, produced this 8 by 10 inch plate, and its catalog places the image in the late 1890s, when the Brooklyn was new to service.
