Built by William Cramp & Sons in Philadelphia, the cruiser U.S.S. Brooklyn is identified on this glass plate, which also bears the notation "Phila." The ship entered service in 1896 and became best known during the Spanish-American War, when it fought at the Battle of Santiago de Cuba in July 1898 as part of Commodore Winfield Scott Schley's squadron. The Detroit Publishing Company sent photographers across the country to document ships, cities and landscapes around 1900, and this view reflects that effort to record the navy's new steel fleet.
