The Katahdin, recorded here as a battleship, lies at the Brooklyn Navy Yard in this glass-plate negative from the late 1890s to about 1901. The yard, founded in 1801 on the East River, was one of the country's principal shipbuilding and repair facilities, and warships of this era were often photographed there while being fitted out or serviced. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made the view, was a commercial firm known for documenting American cities and landscapes, and its 1901 catalog helps date the image.
