Photographed at League Island Navy Yard in South Philadelphia, the cruiser *Brooklyn* was built at the nearby Cramp shipyard and commissioned in 1896. Later, as flagship of Commodore Winfield Scott Schley's squadron, she fought at the Battle of Santiago de Cuba during the Spanish-American War in 1898. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this 8 by 10 inch glass negative, documented American cities, railroads and landmarks in the late 1890s and early 1900s.
