This lithograph stands out for its high vantage point over the harbor, which places Governors Island in the water and spreads the streets of New York and Brooklyn across the view. J. Bachmann drew the scene from nature and worked it directly on stone, a method that let him record crowded wharves, rooftops, and shipping in fine detail. Published around 1851, it captures two cities during a period of rapid growth, when Brooklyn was still a separate municipality across the East River. Views like this gave viewers a way to take in the growing port at a glance.
