A skating carnival held on Brooklyn ice on February 10, 1862 is the event this engraving records, and the wood engraving ran in Harper's Weekly on February 22 of that year, on page 125. The scene is drawn from the ice-skating culture of New York in the 1860s, when winter frozen ponds and bays drew large crowds of skaters in fancy dress. The costumes are the thing to notice here, since the period's illustrators took pleasure in showing skaters in elaborate outfits, and the print gives a sense of how popular and fashionable the sport had become in the city.
