Anchored in Hampton Roads, the sheltered water where the James and Elizabeth rivers meet Chesapeake Bay, the armored cruiser *Brooklyn* was a major unit of the young U.S. Navy when this stereograph was made. Keystone View Company of Meadville, Pennsylvania, issued the card around 1898, and such pairs were viewed through parlor stereoscopes. The ship was commissioned in 1896 and later that year its war service would begin, so the picture captures the fleet just before the Spanish-American War. The catalog lists it under battleships, though the *Brooklyn* was classed as a cruiser.
