Currier & Ives produced this 1879 lithograph as a bird's-eye view of Brooklyn, then still a separate city across the East River from Manhattan and not yet absorbed into New York City, which happened in 1898. Such panoramic views were popular in the period because they let viewers take in a whole city at a glance, with its streets, church spires, waterfront, and shipping rendered in careful detail. The firm, based in New York, sold these hand-colored and plain prints widely, so the image also shows how civic pride and commercial promotion went hand in hand in the late nineteenth century.
