Louis Lozowick's 1936 lithograph turns a view from Brooklyn toward the Manhattan waterfront into a study of hard-edged geometry, with towers, cranes and piers stacked against the harbor. Lozowick, a Russian-born American artist who had spent time in the Soviet Union, drew on the Precisionist and Constructivist habits he had absorbed, treating the city as a machine-built structure rather than a picture-postcard scene. The print belongs to the 1930s, when many American artists turned to lithography and the Depression-era economy made industrial waterfronts and skylines a recurring subject. Its signature on the stone and pencil signature and date help confirm that the image was made by hand with the artist's own involvement.
