Biller, identified in the caption as a high jumper, is captured at the Y.M.C.A. in Brooklyn, where the Young Men's Christian Association ran athletic programs for young men in the early 1900s. The picture is a glass negative from the Bain News Service, the New York agency founded by George Grantham Bain that supplied newspapers with news and sports photographs around 1908. The title comes from caption data the agency wrote on the negatives, which has not been independently verified, so the athlete's full name and the exact event remain uncertain. Even so, the image shows how quickly action photography was becoming a regular part of American newspaper coverage.
