The most distinctive detail here is the ship: the portrait is tied to the cruiser *Brooklyn*, named for the New York city across the East River, and the young officer Ensign Roys is identified with her. Commissioned in 1896, the armored cruiser served as Commodore Winfield Scott Schley's flagship and fought at the Battle of Santiago de Cuba in July 1898. The Detroit Publishing Company, known for its western views and scenic photographs for railroad promotion, made this glass negative in the years just before that war, when the new steel navy was drawing wide public attention.
