A portrait of Ensign Roys, identified with the U.S.S. Brooklyn, the protected cruiser commissioned in 1896 and named for the city of Brooklyn. The ship took part in the Spanish-American War in 1898, including the Santiago campaign in Cuba, so a naval officer photographed on her in these years would have served during a busy and consequential period for the Navy. The picture is a glass dry-plate negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for large-format views of American places and people around the turn of the century. Because the title was supplied from the original jacket and the attribution rests on the negative's number, the identification of the sitter is best read as a likely rather than a fully confirmed record.
