Daniel Ralph Glaze is identified here as a player for the Boston American League club, then known as the Boston Americans. The portrait dates to 1908, a few seasons after the American League began play, when the club was still establishing itself. It belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress, a body of news photographs assembled by a New York photographer and his firm. Bain's images of ballplayers were made for newspapers and were often posed, which gives this print the formal look typical of its era. The record offers little more about Glaze's career, so the caption card remains the main source for who he was.
