Daniel Dewey Barnard (1797–1861) was a Massachusetts lawyer and politician who served in the U.S. House of Representatives and later as a judge and diplomat, and this engraving preserves his likeness in the formal manner of mid-nineteenth-century portrait prints. The plate credits Boston publisher F.T. Stuart as the publisher and J.W. Black as the photographer whose image was translated into an engraving, a common practice when photographs were reproduced as printed portraits for wide sale. Because the record gives only a broad date range, the print likely reflects the decades before and after the Civil War, when such portraits circulated as keepsakes and as illustrations of public figures.
