Few views of Boston from the mid-1940s capture the city as a whole the way this aerial scene does, with its dense street grid and the harbor set against the built-up peninsula. Taken on July 16, 1946, it belongs to a wave of aerial photography that flourished in the years after World War II, when airplanes gave photographers a bird's-eye view of American cities that ground-level pictures could not match. The record places it among the Library of Congress's aerial photographs from the 1940s, and the Copyright Office notes suggest it was registered for protection as a published work. Looking closely, viewers can trace how the old colonial street pattern, the rail lines, and the waterfront shaped the city's layout in that period.
