Look for the battleship Iowa at the left edge, which the photographer labeled on the glass negative and which sets this view apart from other harbor scenes. The picture shows the return of the fleet that had fought at Santiago de Cuba that July, when the U.S. Navy destroyed Spain's squadron off the coast of Cuba. On August 20, 1898, the ships came back to New York for a welcoming parade, and small tugboats crowded the water around them, as the subject headings note. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued many views of American cities and events, made the negative, and it is attributed to a photographer named Hart.
