This photograph shows the armored cruiser U.S.S. New York during a cutter race at Newport, Rhode Island, held on July 3, 1899, the first anniversary of the Battle of Santiago de Cuba. In that 1898 engagement during the Spanish-American War, the U.S. Navy destroyed Admiral Cervera's Spanish squadron off Cuba's southern coast, and the New York had served as Rear Admiral William T. Sampson's flagship. Cutter races, in which crews rowed the ship's heavy working boats, were a popular feature of naval life at the time, and the anniversary gave the event added meaning. The image comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers documented American scenery and everyday life in the early 1900s.
