Sailors aboard the cruiser U.S.S. New York staged a four-round boxing bout to mark the anniversary of the Battle of Santiago, fought off Santiago de Cuba on July 3, 1898. In that engagement, the U.S. Navy destroyed Spain's Caribbean squadron during the Spanish-American War, and the New York, which carried Rear Admiral William T. Sampson's flag, was among the American ships that took part. Taken in 1899, the glass-plate negative shows the crew turning a victory anniversary into an organized contest of their own. Such shipboard recreation was common in the late-1890s navy, when enlisted men often boxed for entertainment and morale.
