Taken on the first anniversary of the Battle of Santiago, this view shows sailors of the cruiser U.S.S. New York racing in sacks, a lighthearted break from routine aboard a warship. On July 3, 1898, the U.S. Navy destroyed the Spanish squadron off Santiago de Cuba, a decisive victory in the Spanish-American War, and crews marked the date in later years with contests and celebrations. The New York had served as Rear Admiral William T. Sampson's flagship during that campaign. The Detroit Publishing Company, known for its wide photographic record of American life and travel around 1900, made the negative.
