Sailors aboard the cruiser U.S.S. New York take part in a potato race, held on the first anniversary of the Battle of Santiago de Cuba, when the Spanish fleet was destroyed off the Cuban coast on July 3, 1898. The New York served as Rear Admiral William T. Sampson's flagship during that campaign, and the anniversary was marked with games and contests on deck. The photograph dates from 1899 and comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers recorded American places and everyday life on large glass negatives. Scenes like this one show how enlisted men spent their off-duty hours in the years after the Spanish-American War.
