Lord Cassidy, the mascot aboard the cruiser U.S.S. New York, is the figure at the center of this 1899 print, which marks the first anniversary of the naval victory off Santiago de Cuba on July 3, 1898. The New York was Rear Admiral William T. Sampson's flagship during that battle, when the U.S. Navy destroyed Spain's Caribbean squadron in a few hours. The title uses a period term for the mascot's race, and the image falls under caricature, so it reflects how sailors and the public of the time portrayed shipboard life. Black sailors served in the wartime Navy in the same era, and the picture is worth reading with that history in mind.
