This view records the return of the American warships that had blockaded Santiago de Cuba to New York Harbor in August 1898, after the Spanish squadron was destroyed off that city on July 3. The homecoming drew crowds to the waterfront and marked the close of the Spanish-American War's naval campaign. The picture is a large 11 by 14 inch glass negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its topographic and documentary views, and its catalog record attributes it to a photographer named Hart. Its scale and sharp detail make it useful for studying the warships and the ceremonies of the period.
