Newport's harbor, shown here with the fleet of the New York Yacht Club, places a Rhode Island seaport at the center of American yachting in the decades before 1910. The Newport waterfront was a summer destination for wealthy New Yorkers and Bostonians, and the club's racing yachts gathered there each season. This glass-plate negative is one of the Detroit Publishing Company's views, a commercial photography firm known for its large survey of American places around the turn of the twentieth century. Its catalog number and the 8 by 10 inch format make it a typical example of the company's documentary work, which captured resorts and waterfronts for travel publications.
