Photographed at Newport, Rhode Island, on August 3, 1890, this view shows the fleet of the New York Yacht Club, a club founded in New York in 1844 that held much of its summer racing at Newport. By the 1880s Newport was a fashionable summer colony for wealthy families, and the club's yachts gathered there each season to race and socialize in the harbor. The record is a glass negative measuring 8 by 10 inches, and its attribution to the Detroit Publishing Company rests on the style of the title and numbering rather than a confirmed company number. It entered the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
