Steam yachts of the New York Yacht Club trailed the America's Cup match of 1901, and this glass negative records one of them, the *Chester W. Chapin*, as it cruised among the race fleet. That series saw the defending schooner *Columbia* beat Sir Thomas Lipton's challenger *Shamrock II* in three straight races, with the club's steamers carrying members and guests along to watch. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this 8 by 10 inch plate, was then photographing American cities, resorts and events for sale as postcards and prints, so the picture also shows how the yachting season drew crowds to the New York waterfront.
