Few Revolutionary battles were fought as fiercely at such close range as the clash at Oriskany, in New York's Mohawk Valley, where militia under General Nicholas Herkimer set out in August 1777 to relieve Fort Stanwix. This wood engraving, published in *Ballou's Pictorial* in May 1857, revisits that ambush eighty years later, when the battle had become a point of pride in the state's frontier past. Herkimer was wounded in the leg early in the fighting, yet he kept directing his men while propped against a tree, and he died of his injuries later that month. The print bears the names of the engravers Chapin and Damoreau.
