A young shoe shiner named Frank Villanello stands at 21 Greenwich Avenue in Manhattan, and the sign reading "Father's Stand" tells us his work was tied to a family business. Lewis Hine, who worked for the National Child Labor Committee, is the attributed photographer, and the picture dates to July 1910. Hine documented working children on city streets to build public support for child labor laws, and his street trades portraits remain among the most direct records of how boys earned money in early twentieth-century New York.
